CHARTERED COLLEGE OF TEACHING COMMENTS ON TEACHER WORKLOAD SURVEY

The Department for Education has today (11 October) published the results of the 2019 Teacher Workload Survey which looks at working hours and workload.

The survey finds that while there has been a reduction in workload, over 70% of teachers are still working more than their contracted hours and is above that of an average worker.

In response, Professor Dame Alison Peacock, Chief Executive of the Chartered College of Teaching, said:

“The reported decline in working hours of our teachers, including the amount of work having to be done outside of the classroom, is unquestionably positive news and is something we welcome. However, this fall needs to be sharper and faster. With the vast majority of our teachers still saying their workloads are unmanageable we risk pushing more and more teachers to burnout and losing them from our profession.

Our teachers deserve to be supported to develop the skills and confidence to focus on what they know works and what will benefit their pupils. No matter what stage of their career, teachers need access to the tools and insights to make informed decisions and collaborate with their peers.
