Summer reading recommendations for teachers

The Chartered College of Teaching team have collated their varied summer reading recommendations for teachers, headteachers, teaching assistants and all educators.

Together, we have a range of books to share with you including books covering inclusivity and diversity, books for mentors, books on education policy, books for early career teachers and more!


1. Understanding and Reducing Anxiety in the Primary School: Theory and Practice for Building a Compassionate Culture for All Educators by Shirley Clarke, Angela Evans and Kate Moss

This book is a new publication which is a great includes practical strategies for primary issues including panic attacks and school refuser children.


2. Improving Education Policy Together: How It’s Made, Implemented, and Can Be Done Better by Nansi Ellis and Gareth Conyard

This book is described by Prof. Dame Alison Peacock as having ‘great insights’ and being published with ‘excellent timing’.


3. A Little Guide for Teachers: Thriving in Your First Years of Teaching by Yamina Bibi

This book is described as ‘little in size but BIG on all the support and inspiration you need to navigate your day-to-day life as a teacher.’

Supporting teacher to take charge of a classroom for the first time, build new relationships and plan for lessons.


4. Equitable Education: What everyone in education should know about closing the attainment gap by Sameena Choudry

Relevant for trainees, teachers and school leaders, this book aims to provide an in-depth understanding of the complex issues facing different groups of disadvantaged pupils, with suggestions of practical strategies we can implement in our classrooms and in our schools.


5. What every teacher needs to know: How to embed evidence-informed teaching and learning in your school by Jade Pearce

Easy to access, bitesize summaries of 20 key research papers, with practical suggestions and implications for classroom practice and leadership from one of our Fellows, Jade Pearce.


6. The Early Career Framework Handbook by the Chartered College of Teaching
