Development of Teaching Practice Award

There are three pathways to achieving the Development of Teaching Practice Award, meaning you can select the pathway that is most relevant for your role.

Graduation & AGM, 11th November 2023

For: Practising teachers and middle leaders                 Cost: £129                   Length: 3-6 months

Eligibility: You will need to be a practising classroom teacher and a member of the Chartered College of Teaching.

This assessment unit explores the development of teacher expertise. You will identify a specific aspect of your teaching that you would like to develop, reflecting upon and evaluating your current practice before engaging in cycles of deliberate practice to refine your approaches and hone your expertise in your chosen area. As part of the supporting content for this assessment unit, you will have access to a short online course that will help you to familiarise yourself with the evidence around development of teacher expertise and guide you through the process of deliberate practice. At the end of the unit, you will reflect on your experience and share effective practice, submitting a Developing Teaching Portfolio for formal assessment.

This unit also includes free access to IRIS Connect software; a powerful professional development tool that enables you to record and reflect on your classroom practice.

Successful completion of the unit assessment leads to the Development of Teaching Practice Award and offers 20 credits towards Chartered Teacher Status.

This assessment unit uses a combination of guided online learning, independent self-directed study and sustained periods of classroom-based, deliberate practice. 

There is around 3-4 hours of core learning content:

– Explore research and evidence around the development of expertise

– Build your understanding of deliberate practice and how you can use this to refine and develop your teaching practice as part of this assessment

– Consider approaches to teacher evaluation and access tools and resources that will support you in evaluating your own practice as part of the assessment.

 

Additional supporting content includes:

– Complimentary access to IRIS Connect software, a powerful professional development tool that enables you to record and reflect on your classroom practice

– Detailed assessment guidance

– A collection of evidence-informed rubrics to support the evaluation and development of practice

– Assessment exemplars

– Reading list

– Resources and activities to support you with your research engagement

– Technical guidance for recording and submitting your video presentation.

All content will be accessed via the Chartered College of Teaching’s online learning platform, MyPD.

As part of this assessment, you will be required to engage with research and evidence around an area of classroom practice of your choosing, undertaking two cycles of deliberate practice in your classroom and seeking feedback from a colleague, coach or mentor in at least one of these deliberate practice cycles. 

Your submission will take the form of a Developing Teaching Portfolio, which must include:

– A summary of key research, including rationale for deliberate practice (500 – 800 words)

– An action plan for two cycles of deliberate practice (no word count)

– Two deliberate practice reflections (500 – 800 words each)

– A recorded video presentation (5-7 minutes in length)

– Appendices (including evidence of feedback received).

Academic writing

Candidates will need to be comfortable with writing clearly and concisely in a formal tone and style, structuring their work in a logical manner. We expect all candidates to uphold the highest standards in academic integrity, through appropriately referencing their attributions in a consistent format.

– Have autonomy over your professional learning and development as you implement and embed evidence-informed pedagogical approaches in your classroom

1. How long will it take to prepare for and complete this assessment unit?

We would expect that most candidates would be able to complete the Developing Teaching Portfolio assessment within 3 months. This includes time to engage in two cycles of deliberate practice, with each cycle lasting around 2-4 weeks. Typically, you should aim to complete this assessment within one term.

Cost: £179                 Length: 3-6 months

Eligibility: You will need to be a practising school leader and a member of the Chartered College of Teaching.

This assessment unit explores the development of teacher expertise. You will use our CPD review tool to undertake a robust evaluation of your school’s existing CPD practice, identifying strengths and potential areas for development as part of a school and peer review. You’ll choose a specific area of CPD to focus on in more detail and engage with evidence and research to build your understanding and practice in this area. As part of the supporting content for this assessment unit, you will have access to a short online course that will help you to familiarise yourself with the evidence around development of teacher expertise and guide you through the process of evaluating the effectiveness of CPD practice in your context. At the end of the unit, you will reflect on your experience and share effective practice, submitting a CPD Review Portfolio for formal assessment.

Successful completion of the unit assessment leads to the Development of Teaching Practice Award and offers 20 credits towards Chartered Teacher (Leadership) Status.

This assessment unit uses a combination of guided online learning, independent self-directed study and dedicated time to focus on developing CPD practice in your context.

There is around 5-6 hours of core learning content:

– Explore areas of key research around approaches to teacher professional learning and development, including: school culture, collaboration, deliberate practice, instructional coaching, mentoring and classroom observation

– Become familiar with evidence and guidance to support effective CPD leadership within your school context, including identifying CPD needs, overcoming common barriers, and evaluating impact

– Access a CPD review tool and resources that will support evaluation of your own school/s CPD practice as part of the CPD Review Portfolio assessment.

There is also the opportunity to take your learning further with an additional 6+ hours of content including expert video presentations, case studies and reading lists.

 

Additional supporting content includes:

– Detailed assessment guidance

– A free CPD review tool developed by the Teacher Development Trust

– Guidance for engaging in peer review

– Assessment exemplars

– Resources and activities to support you with your research engagement.

All content will be accessed via the Chartered College of Teaching’s online learning platform, MyPD.

In this assessment, you will be required to undertake a review of CPD in your school, using this to refine and develop your approaches moving forward. As part of the CPD review process you will be required to seek external input in the form of a peer review (or external review with a coach, school development partner or similar) and must make your own arrangements for this. 

 

Your submission will take the form of a CPD Review Portfolio. Which must include:

– An initial written reflection, following your initial review (500 – 800 words)

– A summary of key research, including a proposed outline for development (700 – 1,100 words)

– A follow up reflection (500 – 800 words)

– A recorded video presentation (5-7 minutes in length)

– Appendices (containing any supporting documents, including a written record of the school self-review and peer review).

1. How long will it take to prepare for and complete this assessment unit?

We would expect that most candidates would be able to complete the CPD Review Portfolio assessment within 3-6 months (typically within two terms but this may be shorter or longer depending on your school circumstances). You should ensure that you plan enough time to undertake your initial review, engage with research and evidence relating to your chosen area, put actions in place to refine or develop your school/s CPD approaches and review progress and prepare and record your recorded presentation.

For: Practising mentors working with classroom-based teachers

Cost: £129                 Length: 3-6 months

Eligibility: You will need to be a practising mentor and a member of the Chartered College of Teaching.

In this assessment unit, you will choose an aspect of your mentoring practice that you wish to develop, then engage with research and evidence around your chosen area and use this to develop an evidence-informed action plan, engaging in cycles of purposeful practice to refine your approaches and hone your expertise in your chosen area. At the end of the unit, you will reflect on your experience and share effective practice, submitting a Mentoring Development Portfolio for formal assessment.

As part of the supporting content for this assessment unit, you will have access to a short online course that will help you to familiarise yourself with some of the evidence around effective mentoring and the development of expertise. The course content will also guide you through the process of evaluating and developing your mentoring practice as part of the unit assessment.

Successful completion of the unit assessment leads to the Development of Teaching Practice Award (Mentor) and offers 20 credits towards Chartered Teacher (Mentor) Status.

This assessment unit uses a combination of guided online learning, independent self-directed study and sustained periods of mentoring-focused, purposeful practice. 

There is around 3-4 hours of core learning content, in which you will:

– explore research and evidence around the development of expertise and effective mentoring

– build your understanding of ‘deliberate’ or ‘purposeful’ practice and how you can use this to refine and develop your mentoring practice 

– access tools and resources that will support you in evaluating your practice as part of the assessment.

 

Additional supporting resources include: 

– detailed assessment guidance and exemplars; 

– a collection of evidence-informed rubrics to support evaluation and development of mentoring practice; 

– reading lists, resources and activities to support you with your research engagement.

All content will be accessed via the Chartered College of Teaching’s online learning platform, MyPD.

In this assessment, you will be required to engage with research and evidence around an area of mentoring practice of your choosing, undertaking two cycles of purposeful practice to refine your approaches. You are also required to seek feedback from a supervisor, colleague, another mentor or your mentee, as part of a professional discussion with a focus on enhancing and refining your approaches further.

 

Your submission will take the form of a Mentoring Development Portfolio, which must include:

– A summary of key research, including rationale for purposeful practice (500 – 800 words)

– An action plan for two cycles of purposeful practice (no word count)

– Two purposeful practice reflections (500 – 800 words each)

– A recorded video presentation sharing effective practice (5-7 minutes in length)

– Appendices (including evidence of feedback received).

 

Academic writing

1. How long will it take to prepare for and complete this assessment unit?

It typically takes around one term to complete this assessment unit. There is around 3-4 hours of online content that you will need to work through, however there is an additional element of self-study that will take you beyond this as you engage with wider reading and research around your chosen theme. How long you spend on this is up to you and is likely to vary depending on your prior knowledge and interest. For similar courses, participants report spending around 5-10 hours undertaking wider reading and then writing up their research summary. 

Much of the other activity you undertake in this unit is practical and will involve you trialling, practising and refining your mentoring approaches within your ongoing mentoring activity. There is no minimum or maximum amount of time required for this – you are encouraged to integrate this into your existing work as much as possible and undertake as much ‘purposeful practice’ as you feel you require in order to meet your individual goals for this activity.
