The Commission on Race and Ethnic Disparities has today (31st March) published its report looking at race and ethnic disparities in the UK.

Dame Alison Peacock, CEO of the Chartered College of Teaching, commented:

We should be constantly seeking to achieve greater diversity, equity and inclusivity across the teaching profession. Schools, colleges and universities play important roles in social cohesion, and with our communities becoming richly diverse, schools need to reflect the areas where their pupils grow up. The positive impact of visible role models on young people from different backgrounds cannot be underestimated, it can help encourage pupils – no matter their ethnicity, gender or sexuality – to embrace who they are and be the best that they can be. Teachers from a wide range of backgrounds need to recognise routes into teaching as a prestigious profession where opportunities for progression and leadership are equitable and fair.
