Why We’re Leaving X (Twitter) and Where to Find Us Now

Why Chartered College of Teaching is leaving X (twitter) and where to find us now

Earlier this year we asked our members and the wider education community whether we should leave X (formerly Twitter), and why.

Should we leave x (twitter)? pie chart

88% of you told us that X is no longer the space it once was. You shared concerns about:

  • the rise of unregulated hate speech and misinformation
  • toxic online environments that stifle professional discussion
  • unreliable algorithms that bury relevant educational content
  • values that increasingly conflict with our own.

We have continued a reduced presence up until now, to support colleagues who remain on the platform and to share the work of the Chartered College and its members. This was reinforced by the 12% of you who felt we should stay. You told us that X still holds education communities, that a positive professional voice matters and that remaining present could help maintain political neutrality.

However, the environment on X makes it increasingly difficult to have respectful, professional conversations. It is no longer a space that reflects our values or professional principles, nor one where we can effectively serve you.

That’s why we will be stepping away from X.

We want our social media feed to be full of positivity and upbeat stories of professionalism. It is with this in mind that we have decided to focus on other platforms.

Whilst the Chartered College of Teaching remains apolitical, our commitment to evidence-based practice, diversity, equity and inclusion means we cannot support platforms where hate speech and misinformation flourish unchecked. Creating safe, respectful spaces for educational discourse is not a political stance; it’s fundamental to our professional values. We recognise this decision may disappoint some of our community, but we believe our responsibility is to champion environments where all educators can engage professionally and safely.

Therefore, we will be stopping our activity on X. Our account will remain dormant, with previous posts remaining to direct the education community on X to our resources and other platforms. We encourage you to follow us on other social media accounts, such as Bluesky and LinkedIn, where we maintain a large active presence and encourage a respectful, constructive dialogue.
