AI offers exciting opportunities for school staff, but it also comes with risks. Support materials released in June 2025, and updated in May 2026, funded by the Department for Education (DfE), developed by Chiltern Learning Trust and the Chartered College of Teaching informed by research and stakeholder feedback, will help schools and colleges to use AI safely, effectively and ethically.
Support materials developed by Chiltern Learning Trust will help teachers, leaders, and other school support staff to understand and use AI tools safely and effectively. Teachers and teaching assistants who complete the training can choose to complete the certified multiple-choice assessment. Successful eligible candidates will also be awarded with credits towards Chartered Teacher Status.
AI has huge potential in education, but it also comes with huge risks. The only way to address the risks and maximise the opportunities is for the education workforce to be fully confident and competent in safe and effective use of AI. These materials are vital to helping provide the training, research, support and examples of practice that early years settings, schools and colleges need to develop their staff members’ expertise. The Chartered College of Teaching is delighted to have been part of developing these materials and to be providing certification opportunities.

Successful eligible candidates will also receive five credits towards Chartered Status. Our short and free-to-access certified assessment will allow teachers, leaders and other school and college support staff to evidence their understanding of AI in practice, based on the following areas:
The Chartered College of Teaching has curated an expert collection of video and audio case studies exploring the use of AI across a range of different educational settings and phases. Teachers and leaders discuss how they are using AI to reduce teachers’ workload, support inclusion, improve the accessibility of learning materials, boost teacher and student wellbeing, and deliver effective teaching and learning. They also delve into some of the challenges engaging with AI involves and how to implement it safely and ethically.
The collection also includes research articles in which authors explore research they’ve undertaken or engaged with related to using AI in education, presenting the implications to support evidence-informed use of AI in schools and colleges.
AI presents both promise and challenge for education. These materials help demystify AI, empowering educators to make informed, ethical decisions in the classroom and across schools. This work will make a real difference to teachers on the ground, helping them use AI with confidence to support them whilst keeping humans centre stage.

We have published a special online issue of Impact which explores the multiple implications, opportunities and challenges associated with using AI across a range of educational contexts. The special issue includes a range of articles including reflections, case studies and original research.
For the launch of the special edition of Impact on the safe and effective use of AI in education, we held a webinar panel discussion featuring authors from the issue. The issue demonstrates how AI tools are being used in schools and discusses the benefits, issues and uncertainties surrounding the rapid uptake of this technology by educators and students. It looks at the impact AI could have on supporting students with SEND, the workload crisis and the role of the teacher, as well as discussing training requirements, data protection and AI policies.
