Recognising Excellence in Catholic Education: The Catholic Educator Specialism

By: Chartered College of Teaching

Chartered Teacher Status is a professional accreditation that provides formal recognition to highly accomplished teachers and school leaders who have attained an advanced standard of practice.

At the Chartered College of Teaching, we are pleased to have launched the Catholic Educator Specialism, the first of its kind.

Building on an established partnership with the Catholic Education Service, we have recently been working with a co-design group of Catholic schools, trusts and dioceses to offer something distinctly different for those teaching in a Catholic school context.

What is the opportunity?

Launching in April 2026, this new 15-month programme will enable participating teachers to complete tailored assessments in evidence-informed practice, teaching practice, education research and inquiry; and professional knowledge, with a focus on core elements found within Catholic education, including Catholic life and mission, religious education and prayer and liturgy.

For those who decide to take this step and work towards achieving Chartered Status via this new specialism, the process will be both challenging and hugely rewarding. They will engage with research and evidence, and seek out professional learning, development and formation opportunities that enable them to attain the high standard expected of a Chartered Teacher, and flourish in their role as a Catholic educator, with opportunities for them to share your journey and expertise with other Catholic colleagues, near and far.

For just £679 per person (£575 if they are already Chartered College members), teachers can join the pilot cohort, and be the first in the country to work towards this specialist accreditation.

“Chartered Teacher Status is the gold standard of the profession. The Catholic Educator Specialism is important because educators in Catholic schools must integrate faith and life effectively to become teachers and witnesses – this pathway enables that to be done in an integrated and authentic way.”  Paul Barber FCCT, Director of the Catholic Education Service

“Chartered Teacher Status has been an excellent pathway to improving my practice as a teacher. The high-quality professional development material means that I can ensure my students are getting high quality teaching and learning experiences. I cannot recommend it highly enough.” Laura McAleer FCCT CTeach, Head of Science, St. Patrick’s Catholic College
