Reflecting on the David Monis-Weston lecture

On Monday 15th June, Fellows and members of the Chartered College of Teaching, and their guests, along with key leaders and thinkers working on teacher professional development gathered at One Birdcage Walk in Westminster for the David Monis-Weston lecture. This annual lecture series, introduced last year by the Teacher Development Trust (TDT), was described by CEO Gareth Conyard, as "being curious, asking hard questions, expanding our understanding". It is an opportunity for the profession to hold itself to account for the quality of teacher development.

Why high-quality vocational education matters and what we can learn from other countries about putting it in place

In his by-election victory speech, Andy Burnham reiterated the need for a strong education system that ‘offers a path for everybody, academic and technical in equal balance’. The fact that nearly one million young people aged 16 to 24 in the UK are not currently in education, employment or training - the second highest rate in Europe - it seems timely to reflect on what we mean by high-quality vocational education and what countries with different education systems and lower youth unemployment rates do differently, which is the aim of this blog post.
