Developing best practice in the teaching of phonics and early literacy

This Chartered College network hub event hosted by the CLPE will be a chance to explore research and best practice in the teaching of phonics and early literacy. Tickets for this event can be purchased via the following link:
Professor of Early Childhood & Primary Education Dominic Wyse, the Founding Director of the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Pedagogy, will give a unique insight into the research around phonics and early reading.
CLPE Lead Advisory Teacher, Anjali Patel, will look at what this research means for practice in the classroom and how schools are developing best practice in early reading and phonics by focussing on the use high-quality texts and the effective teaching of phonics within a rich reading curriculum.
Robert Paul, Phonics in a Rich Reading Curriculum lead at Charles Dickens Primary School, Southwark, will reflect on how his school has developed their approach to the teaching of early reading and phonics to raise engagement and attainment in reading and writing at the end of KS1 and 2, alongside the phonics screening check.
Ensuring all children learn to read, and also enjoy the literature they encounter in their schools, settings and at home, is a priority for not only ensuring academic progress and achievement but also as a means of closing the socio-economic gap. We know that children who read independently encounter more words and generally have a better vocabulary, improved linguistic skills in the form of a more competent use of grammar and better spelling, as well as being more effective communicators.
Throughout the session, there will be opportunities to reflect on and discuss the research underpinning the approaches shared. This will all be considered within the context of the challenges and demands of the contemporary classroom.

Registration for the event opens at 5pm. At the end of the session, attendees will be able to purchase quality texts to support children as early readers from Letterbox Library.
