CHARTERED COLLEGE COMMENTS ON TEACHER WORKFORCE DYNAMICS IN ENGLAND REPORT

The Chartered College of Teaching has commented on the findings in today’s ‘Teacher Workforce Dynamics in England’ report. The research from National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) and Nuffield Foundation calls for the Government to place a greater emphasis on improving teacher retention to ease teacher supply pressures.
Professor Dame Alison Peacock, Chief Executive of the Chartered College of Teaching, said:

“With increasing numbers of teachers leaving the profession, it’s no surprise that the job satisfaction and wellbeing of their colleagues is being constantly undermined. We cannot expect teachers to deliver more, to teach in ever growing classrooms and maintain high pupil attainment while more and more teachers are leaving and the number of qualified teachers entering the profession falls.

The Chartered College believes that any answer to this crisis requires the whole of the profession working together. We need to foster a spirit of collegiality; with the whole of the teaching profession providing support and sharing knowledge collectively. We also need to empower teachers to work in the most informed way possible. If we are to tackle the ever-growing inbox, teachers need to have the confidence to ask whether what they are focusing on benefits their pupils.”
