‘Accelerate’ launched to support early career teachers

‘ACCELERATE’ LAUNCHED TO SUPPORT EARLY CAREER TEACHERS

Education Development Trust and Chartered College of Teaching are launching a new and innovative programme of sustained expert support to early career teachers in the autumn term. ‘Accelerate‘ will provide new teachers with the tools to succeed: evidence-informed content delivered through engaging blended learning, expert guidance through specialist instructional coaching and peer-to-peer support through communities of practice.
The programme is built on evidence on improving teacher practice and retention and will target up to 1,500 teachers in schools in areas of England which will most benefit from this support. It has been designed to address the particular challenges faced by early career teachers in priority schools – schools characterised by higher levels of disadvantage, higher proportions of inexperienced teachers and staff turnover and limited capacity to provide effective support and professional development.

Alison Peacock, Chief Executive at the Chartered College of Teaching said: “At the Chartered College of Teaching, we regularly hear about the huge pressures faced by teachers every single day. We know that early career teachers are most likely to describe their workload as being unmanageable. As a result, learning and development can often be the first to fall by the wayside, with the average teacher in England spending only four days on CPD per year. We want to ensure that teachers are provided with the tools and opportunity to develop their learning and to work in the most informed way.

“Our new partnership with Education Development Trust will provide sustained support for early career teachers, empowering them to deliver the best possible education for disadvantaged pupils. Through Accelerate we can deliver lasting results which will not only benefit early career teachers and their pupils, but will spread throughout the workforce and benefit the whole profession.”

“Accelerate is evidence based and has been designed around what works,” explains Matt Davis, UK Director at Education Development Trust. “As with all of our programmes, we have deliberately focused on developing capacity from within the system to ensure that impact is sustainable; we will be working with groups of schools across England as both partners and beneficiaries of this really exciting programme.

“We are delighted to be working in partnership with the Chartered College of Teaching: we share the same values and bring different but complementary strengths to the programme. The combination of the Chartered College of Teaching’s expertise on professional learning and our own experience in efficiently managing large-scale education programmes in a complex landscape gives this programme the best possible chance of success.”
